George Timock's Amazing Packing

The NICE students got to attend a demo by George Timock on his fantastically obsessive way of packing and shipping his work. Both his work and the packing were stunning. George was at Northern Clay Center for the opening of Expatriate Ceramics, an exhibition about how experiences abroad shape an artist's work. George spoke his time at the International Ceramic Workshop in Hungary and its impact on him as an artist and teacher.

Made Here MN

Brenda Ryan, a 2016 MN NICE graduate, took part in Made Here MN, a project of Hennepin Theater Trust that temporarily exhibits the work of Minnesota Artists in empty storefronts. Brenda filled the window with a tree, cut stumps, and an amazing trompe l'oeil saw that grew out of her class materials research project into adobe and paper clay.

HomeWork Gallery Talk

The MN NICE group met with Jen Rogers, Professor at Coe College, this week for a discussion of her installation in the Emily Galusha Gallery. The piece is called HomeWork and is comprised of a large suspended canvas tapestry and textured coil pots on a beautifully restored antique table. We discussed her concept for the show, her approach to materials, and some of the practicalities with setting up the installation. It was a great talk and chance to get a "behind the scenes" look at putting together the show.

Rebecca Hutchinson Installation

Rebecca Hutchinson, Professor at University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth, was at NCC this week creating an installation for the Florilegium exhibition in the gallery. Some of the MN NICE students had the opportunity to help her install, and the group meet for an in-progress discussion of her choice of materials, the paper clay process, innovative approaches to construction, and the evolution of her work throughout her career.
